Tomita: A Premier Tokyo Lunch Omakase Experience

In what is generally a members-only dining experience, we tried our luck with a booking at Tomita in Omotesando, Tokyo over the holiday season. Much to our delight, we were granted two seats at lunch for the sushi omakase.

We had been to Tomita almost a year ago and remembered being beyond impressed with the food and service, so we figured it was time to give it another go for a review.

Atmosphere

The main sushi counter seats no more than 6-8 people and comfortably fits two sushi masters. To the side, there is a separate private dining room for larger groups.

In typical authentic Japanese fashion, Tomita is a quiet and low-key environment. The music is ever so faint. Talking louder than a few decibels feels like an act of shame, yet this isn't an unfamiliar situation in Japanese omakases.

Our Course

There are two lunchtime omakases available on the menu, both with similar items. We chose the slightly more expensive option, which featured some premium ingredients.

The meal consisted of:

  • 3 Appetizers
  • 12 Pieces of Sushi
  • Main Dish
  • Dessert

We began with the chef explaining about the maguro, which was caught just a day earlier weighing in at 161kg.

From here, the sushi began to flow, starting with some of the more fatty and oily cuts:

  • Chutoro
  • Hirame
  • Buri
  • Sawara
  • Kohada
  • Hokigai
  • Akami
  • Boiled tiger ebi
  • Uni
  • Aji
  • Kamasu
  • Anago
  • Ika (add-on)
  • Toro taku maki

The freshness of the fish was absolutely amazing. The buri and kohada were our favorites.

Throughout our sushi journey, we were served several appetizers, soups, and main courses.

The highlights included:

  • Komochi Kombu: dried herring roe with a ponzu sauce. While I'm no stranger to eating fish eggs, this one never ranks at the top of my most-wanted list.
  • Grilled Ebodai (Pacific rudderfish) in a light dashi
  • Hamaguri Broth as a palate cleanser: an amazingly rich dashi bursting with flavor
  • Grilled fish with bamboo and rice mochi

We finished our course with tamagoyaki and genmaicha. The total dining time was about 70 minutes.

Gaijin's review

  • Food quality: Fresh, seasonal, huge amount/serving for lunch
  • Ambience: Traditional omakase fine dining vibe, counter seating
  • Value: 16,000JPY for lunch is a steal
  • Overall rating: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5)
  • Price: $$

Final Thoughts

Over the course of a few weeks, we dined at several omakases in Tokyo as well as Osaka. Tomita was by far the best experience we had throughout the trip in terms of sushi restaurants.

The sheer breadth of different seasonal cuts offered was amazing, with several of them (kamasu and sawara) I hadn't had in a long time.

The chef is also just one of the nicest people, exuding a friendly and welcoming aura with none of the pretentiousness that can sometimes be found at other high-end omakases.

We haven't had the opportunity to attend Tomita for dinner as it's exclusively for members (which we are not), but have been told it is similar to lunch but on steroids in terms of quantity and quality.

Tomita is one of the best lunch omakases we have experienced in Tokyo and is a legendary venue among locals. If you can find a way to book a seat - make sure you do it.
